Academy of Artificers
From The Wizard's Guild Wiki
The Sto Lat Academy of Artificers is the new (2009-03-21) Wizards' guild in Sto Lat, replacing the old one. The signs suggest it is a part of the UU.

[edit] Crondor's Marvellous Sequestration - Places a wizard's staff between here and there.
Crondor's Marvellous Sequestration is a zeroth order miscellaneous spell which turns a sapphire ring into a mystical star sapphire with an arcane connection to the caster's staff, allowing him to slip it into a pocket of some other reality for awhile and retrieve it later.
Uses:
- Ring
- Binding
- Enchanting
- Convoking
- Staff
- a sapphire ring (consumed)
- a handful of purple mineral powder (consumed)
This basically makes a sapphire ring into a pocket wherein you can stash away your staff (the one targeted by the spell) and it will vanish into nothingness until you retrieve it once more. As a result this obviously reduces burden whilst you have the staff stashed away. It cannot hold more than one staff, and only the staff which you have cast the spell on originally. This spell is relatively high levelled and requires bonuses of ~280 for rings, binding/enchanting/convoking 300+, and staves somewhat unsure but around 250+ or so.
[edit] Fiddelmaker's Auriferous Embrace - Introduces an opponent to the hazards of molten gold.
Fiddelmaker's Auriferous Embrace is a first order offensive spell designed to impress some of the hazards of an Artificer's work on an enemy.
Uses:
- Wand
- Gold
- Animating
- a gold ring (consumed) (keep your blorps!)
- a wand (not consumed)
Basically hurls a nasty molten glob at your target. Quite a fast spell, does minimal amounts of damage, can do large backfire damage (1500+, newbies beware). Possibly worth investing in if you have a lot of gold rings or want the tms! Other spells which do similar things already exist.
[edit] Ellamandyr's Hyaline Amulet - Turns a bowl of water into a piece of protective jewellery.
Ellamandyr's Hyaline Amulet is a zeroth order miscellaneous spell of Artifice which creates a protective amulet.
Nobody's quite sure what it protects you from. Getting wet?
Uses:
- Wand
- Water
- Binding
- Silver
- a silver necklace (consumed)
- a wand (not consumed)
[edit] Doctor Worblehat's Flaming Primate Premonition - Creates a flaming monkey.
Doctor Worblehat's had a dream one night about some strange future event. The dream encouraged him to create this spell. Unfortunately, the wizard in the premonition was him and he was never able to tell anyone the secret of the flaming primate.
The flaming monkey is a light source. Requires feeding with Rubayak's Power Dispenser. It produces “quite a bit of light”, and weighs about a pound. (2/9 of a pound, when weighed on the AM post office balance) The length of time between recharges appears to be skill dependent, with high skills creating lights that last up to 10 hours or more.
Uses
- Turning
- Gold
- Enchanting
- Binding
- a rowan orb (consumed)
- a red crystal (consumed)
- a gold ring (consumed)
- a knife (not consumed)
This is a small wooden monkey with an even smaller cage where the belly should be. Within the cage is a tiny red crystal sitting on a golden dais. On the golden dais is a miniscule plaque with minute runes which might mean "Light Me".
The crystal inside the wooden monkey's belly hovers slightly over the golden dais and glows a warm, rose colour. A shimmer of octarine plays across the monkey subtly.
[edit] Rubayak's Power Dispenser - the profitable disposition of bananas.
The great Rubayak developed this spell as an adjunct to Doctor Worblehat's Flaming Primate Premonition.
Feeds the flaming monkey.
Uses:
- Enchanting
- Channeling
- Binding
- a red crystal (consumed)
- a banana (consumed)
- a wooden monkey (not consumed) (?)
[edit] Crafting
[edit] Metalwork at Weestone's
You can order custom metal bars (tiny/small/medium/large).
The current pattern book lets you create pen nibs, which you can combine with pen shafts ([#Woodwork]).
Relevant commands are 'forge', 'sculpt', and 'polish', in that order.
Known as "finesmithing" (according to Touchstone), it uses cr.sm.silver for metals less expensive than gold, and cr.sm.gold otherwise.
Polishing uses cr.sm.bl.tools. TMs & successes seem to start at around 150 bonus.
[edit] Woodwork
The room is slightly hidden.
There's a lathe.
- Bodge a riving on the lathe. (Uses cr.ca.turning.)
- Shave it successfully multiple times. (Uses cr.ca.whittling.)
- Sand it successfully multiple times. (Uses cr.ca.whittling.)
- Optionally, pour ink onto the sponge and stain it successfully 2 times (consuming the ink and the sponge at the end). (Uses cr.art.painting.)
- Polish it successfully once (consuming the wax). (Uses cr.carpentry.furniture.)
It's possible that getting a better result in one step makes subsequent steps more difficult, but this hasn't been thoroughly examined.
[edit] Spell cases
Commands:
- feed puts quills/paper into the case. It doesn't matter what kind — they translate into some papers and a quill in the case.
- channel puts ink in the case.
- feed <spell> to case from my mind puts spells in the case. Skillchecked (against channeling? ~12-13 at 350), getting harder as you add more spells. The spell can be erased from your head; this also seems to be a skillcheck.
- list lists the spells, using the talisman skill. Gets harder with more spells. The Bonus required seems to start at 100 for 1 spell and for every 10 additional bonus you can list an additional spell (e.g. 150 lets you see 5 spells).
- remove removes a single spell from the case.
- empty empties all spells from the case.
- retrieve causes the box to scribe the spell for you. Not sure what skill.
Holding two cases at once will most certainly be fatal, as (it is rumored) that the larger case will eat the smaller case, then explode. It has also been rumored that the smaller case will survive, but that its condition will be severely impacted.
Confirmed that having two cases is enough to make them explode, putting both cases in the vault causes the smaller one to explode when retrieved, large one is intact.
| item | cost | size | weight | capacity (paper) | spell limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| filigreed rowan case | $250 | 9"×3" | 1 3/9 | 18 | 5? |
| caged rowan case | $500 | 6"×3" | ~1.5 | 25 | ? |
| exquisite pearwood case | $750 | 9"×4" | 2 7/9 | 35 | 18+? |
[edit] Recharge room
It absorbs explosion damage, momentarily taking you down to 1 HP before returning to max (odd).
You pay a certain amount to access the room for 10 minutes. This appears to be skill/GL-dependent. Silver Stars seem to get a 50% discount, except for the senior wizard of the order, who gets 75% off.
Prices:
| price | GL (non-star) | GL (silver star) |
|---|---|---|
| $100 | 186 | |
| $150 | 100+ | |
| $300 | 250, 236, 305 | |
| $400 | 314, 334 |

[edit] Piano
There is a piano. It can occasionally hurt you if you are not skilled enough.
[edit] Achievements
Steampunk Artificer is a bit dangerous. The exploding boiler should not kill you if you have a decent amount of HP and a TPA. The runic crescent wrench has 11 "charges" (but it's not an artifact/rechargable according to FCI); invoking it costs 300 GP and requires some ma.it.he.rods to succeed (6/22 at 211 bonus).
(Revision by Ptorgoth: The first time I got the boiler to explode, my HP was taken from 1849 (str+2 from gaunts) to 1334, and the second time, my HP was almost slashed in half (1849 to 945). It should be noted that I had a TPA active during both of these experiments.)
